My name is Kim Kuypers. I'm an enthusiastic researcher with a true passion for psychopharmacological research. My main topics of interest are MDMA and psychedelics, and their effects on (social) cognition, creativity, hormones, and underlying brain mechanisms.
My conviction is that...
'Science is about moving people and being moved both in a physical and an emotional way''
Currently, I'm appointed as assistant professor at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, at the Department of Neuropsychology and Psychopharmacology, which is embedded in the Faculty of Psychology and Neurosciences.
Since the start of my scientific career in 2002, I have been building up expertise in the field of applied and fundamental psychopharmacological studies. My applied research concerns studies into the effects of drugs on driving. In my fundamental research I study the neurobiological mechanisms (receptors/brain areas) underlying cognitive skills using mechanistic pharmaco studies and functional imaging techniques.
Together with a team of researchers we conduct psychedelic research. This research includes 3 pilIars:
(1) placebo-controlled experimental studies focused at understanding the underlying neurobiology of acute and longer term effects of psychedelic substances on empathy and flexible cognition
(2) naturalistic studies focused at understanding the acute and longer term effects of psychedelics on well-being, empathy and flexible cognition in a naturalistic setting
(3) survey studies focused at understanding amongst other motives of drug use
To know what I'm currently working on, see 'Work'. To see what kind of studies we have conducted in the previous years see 'Publications' or click: https://youtu.be/ED2Rxxh9mTs.
